LED Panel lighting demystify

LED panel light
Led panel lights are becoming the most popular led lights in the interior lighting design while the Led lighting technology is developing.

Components of the LED panel light:
1. LED Panel Light Body Frame
LED panel light body frame is used for covering the edge of the light. The frame provides the inner protection and thermal conductivity. Aluminium is the common material used for the frame. The advantages of the aluminium are the good heat dissipation and sleek outlook.
Nowadays, the PVC is the new material which is introduced into the market. Compared with aluminium, PVC made-up frame is more excellent on security and poorer on heat conductivity.
2. LED Panel Light Light Source.
LED 2835 is widely applied in LED panel light because of the advantages of high luminous output and lower cost.
Different quality of LED chipset and efficacy plays a big part in brightness, power consumption and lighting quality.
3. LED Panel Light Guide Plate
Light guide plate is the important component for LED panel light. Low quality LED panel lights will have non-uniformity of light and dark spots while it is operating. Understanding the types of plastic and refractive index is key to having a better LED panel light.
4. LED Panel Light Diffuser
LED panel light diffuser directly affects the light output. Panel light diffuser is made from PMMA or PC. PMMA-made diffuser is high on efficacy---92%. PC-made diffuser is excellent on oxidation resistance. PMMA is considerably used currently in the market.
5. Reflective Plate Reflector
It is applied to improve light efficacy to achieve the high brightness. It is made from translucent nanoscale material, its reflective rate could reach 92%.
6. LED Panel Light Power Supply
Nowadays, LED panel light with LED driver system is commonly acknowledged in the market. The drivers could regulate the voltage and current from the main power supply to light up the lights. The use of high quality driver directly affects the lifespan of the LED panel light.
7. Installation Accessories
Suspension wire, mounting bracket, screws,etc. are also used in LED panel light installation.

A great LED panel light should be equipped with all the good quality components, such like the body frame, LED chips, diffuser, reflector, drivers and also the accessories. Thereafter, it all goes into understanding the standard assembling and manufacturing process of the LED panel light.

Normal Analog LED Strips vs Addressable LED Strips

There are two basic kinds of LED strips, Analog and Digital. They are controlled differently.

Analog strips come in mono (one color) or RGB (full color spectrum). They can be cut into small segments. The segments are marked by metal contact pads and sometimes have a scissors icon screen printed right on them

For each segment the LEDs are wired in series, which means the operating voltages are added up, giving the higher voltage needed. All the segments are wired in parallel, so they get all get the same amount of voltage all the way down the strip, but the current draw adds up depending on the length of the strip.

All the LEDs on the strip will act as one, they are non-addressable. One way to tell by sight is that they do not have any driver chips that you can see on the strip (that would be digital!).

Digital strips come with RGB LEDs and have a driver chip on the strip that control the LEDs individually. These are also called individually addressable or just addressable.
They also come in segmented, where they can be cut down to bite-size lengths. These strips take 5 volts, so they can run straight off a microcontroller. They will power up when attached to 3.3 volts, just not as bright.
Addressable LED strips are usually controlled using micro controller to program cool patterns and make them reactive to sensors and switches. Most of the work is in the software. In addition, Digital strips get their information from one data-in pin or two data-in and clock-in pins, dependent of what strip is used. The datasheet for the pinout diagram, voltage ratings and other useful information varies according to the type and the brand.

Seoul Semiconductor latest development - SUNLIKE LED chipset

For many clients that have been using LEDs lighting for the last 10 years, it is not uncommon to hear complain of Daylight colour having a bluish tone.

There had been many instances where people feel that LED lighting affects the mood and sleep patterns.

To summarise: What this chipset does is it generates LED lighting with a wave spectrum that is closest to natural sunlight presently. Hence, it shows items under a more natural sunlike lighting effect.

Natural sunlight for buildings in Singapore; Combining nature, go green objectives and design

We are excited to share about this great project that we came across in This project is done by a Spanish architect and is situation in Mexico, where it is also as hot as Singapore at times.

This project intrigues us deeply by providing a break through in our perspective on the high level of design architecture we can achieve with natural sunlight.

In Singapore, our new buildings that comply with Greenmark standards usually have a high degree of using natural sunlight and ventilation.

Increasingly, we are also seeing these buildings moving towards the same likeness in many ways, for example;

1. High ceiling for level 1
2. Large openings at the side of buildings to allow air and sunlight to flow through and.
3. Probably a sunroof where sunlight can permeate through the glass.

Some examples of such would be Star Vista, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, Our Tampines Hub, Heartbeat@Bedok and more. Notwithstanding our excitement and pride of having such developments in Singapore; we thought that this project we are sharing offers a fresh perspective to utilising natural sunlight to illuminate a place.

By doing this;
1. Calculating sunlight direction and scale
2. Channelling sunlight through a channel
3. Projecting sunlight to a coloured base
4. Making use of reflection theories to illuminate the place with myraid of colour

All of which, the source of sunlight is renewable, the channel is an old concept used in many applications like a submarine above-sea scope, the coloured base is an affordable and highly changeable set up, reflection of light is just plain old physics theory.

Question is; Do we need to spend a great effort to design a building and its structure to achieve Green mark objectives while having a design you can claim unique to the landscape?

This project clearly shows us that relying on basic physics principles we learnt in O'level may just suffice!

Using UV LED lighting to kill germs bacteria!

Before we thought LEDS are only manufactured semiconductor devices. But, today we realised that LED lighting can actually be grown !

Using different materials, researchers have shown that different LEDs can achieve different wavelengths of light. Through which, we can have different application. Furthermore, Roberto Myers, a materials scientist at Ohio State University in Columbus, and his team has developed LED nanowires on a thin aluminium foil. This invention not only allow UV lighting to be generated, but also takes care of heat dissipation from the LED.

For example, a UV LED lighting made of aluminium gallium nitride is able to kill germs and bacteria in water. Combining this invention with a water filtration system, it may be usefully applied in different places to produce clean portable water.

Using natural body heat or temperature to light up LEDs

Many students these days are experimenting with peizo-electric theory to generate electricity and lighting things up. Combining this theory with the seeback effect, LED lighting is made possible.

Selecting the right type of material that will generate a charge due to temperature difference is critical in lighting up an LEDs.

The amazing thing about LED is the low voltage and current required to light up. This really enable many different applications and electrical generating methods to be applied.

E.g an awesome student in Canada using body heat to light up a torch light. All these without a need for battery.

This might just replace solar panels or be an additional arsenal towards our go-green campaign. This form or renewal energy is both free (from the body heat point of view) and seemingly perpetual.

Stretchable LED Lighting? | Events and Electronics

If lightings can be stretched, how do you think we can enhance our spaces and minimise / reduce lighting costs?

Putting mechanical engineering considerations aside for now? We probably can explore the following;

1. LED Lightings as visual displays for smart clothing
2. LED Lighting for curve screens in Smart Phones
3. Smart LED Lighting for architectural facade (indoor / outdoor ("although challenging it may be"))
4. LED Lighting displays covering different surface area when necessary for advertising and creative industry.

By bringing mechanical engineering considerations in lighting, we might need to explore the following;
1. Stretchable host material for the LEDs where it is both conductive and insulated from touch.
2. Types of material for the LEDs that is able to light up with movable conductive electrical supply
